A little bit about Kiana

Located about 60 miles from Kotzebue, Alaska, Kiana lies near the junction of the Kobuk and Squirrel Rivers. Kiana was settled hundreds of years ago as the main village of the Kobuk River's Kowagmiut Iñupiat Eskimos. In 1909, it became a supply center for mines along the Squirrel River.* A post office was established in 1915, and the city government was incorporated in 1964. The Northwest Arctic Borough was established in 1976. **
